GameArt: Riley Harmon's Watermelons

by Matteo Bittanti

Riley Harmon's latest installation (selected for his senior BFA exhibition") "A Watermelon in the World" is a playful take on Counter-Strike. This original 'contemporary hybrid artist', whom I had the pleasure to interview a while ago, describes is new work in these terms

"When caressed in the physical gallery, watermelons with embedded sensors cause virtual ones to come into existence. They create an absurd disruption to the normal gameplay of a public server for Counter-Strike." (Riley Harmon, 2009)

Once again, the logic here is to visualize the hidden consequences of gameplay, or, rather disrupt it, blending the 'real' and the 'virtual' in an almost surreal, way.
